Experience can shape the way an attorney handles a difficult injury case. For Attorney Jeff “JJ” Shaw, that experience was built over more than three decades, with work on both sides of personal injury law and more than 100 trials involving juries and judges.
Attorney Jeff “JJ” Shaw began developing his courtroom skills long before focusing on premises liability and personal injury cases. While studying at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law, he clerked with Henry Wade in Dallas, Texas. Wade was known for his role as the prosecutor of Jack Ruby and for his involvement in the legal history surrounding the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
During that time, Shaw spent many days discussing Texas law and major cases with Wade. The experience gave him an early look at the demands of trial work and the importance of building trust with a jury.
After graduating from law school in 1989, Shaw became a Deputy Prosecutor in Indiana. He went on to try more than 100 cases before juries and judges. That work helped him develop a strong understanding of evidence rules, courtroom strategy, and the value of presenting facts honestly.
Those lessons later became part of his approach to representing people who were injured because of someone else’s actions.
Seeing Personal Injury Law From Both Sides
Shaw later joined Spangler, Jennings & Dougherty, P.C., one of the largest insurance defense firms in Northern Indiana at the time. His work there included personal injury cases involving major insurance companies such as State Farm, Farm Bureau, Allstate, Farmers, and Progressive.
Working for insurers gave this attorney a different view of personal injury claims. He saw how insurance companies evaluated injury cases and how injured people could face challenges while seeking compensation.
That experience influenced his decision to focus his practice on helping people injured through the fault of others. Rather than viewing a case only from the claimant’s side, he brought knowledge of how insurers approach claims into his work.
Since 2012, Shaw has recovered more than $18 million for clients through verdicts and settlements. Past results, however, do not guarantee a similar outcome in another case.

Shaw earned his J.D. from Indiana University Maurer School of Law in 1989. During law school, he made the Dean’s List, received a fellowship, and reached the Final Four of the school’s Moot Court competition.
He also earned a B.A. from Indiana University in Bloomington in 1986, with double majors in History and English.
His professional memberships include the Indiana Trial Lawyers Association, where he has been a member since 1990, and the Multi-Million Dollar Advocates Forum. He is also a member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum and previously served as President of the Porter County Bar Association in 1998. He is admitted to practice law in Indiana.
